16 Jul Jubilate Director Larry Nickel Stepping Down, Eldon McBride Stepping Up

For the past five years, Jubilate Vocal Ensemble has been blessed to have been under the baton of Dr. Larry Nickel. Larry has shared his expertise with Jubilate in developing an ever-stronger sense of musicality, blending, and expressive singing. Kathaumiwx, an international choral competition held biannually on the Sunshine Coast, brings fabulous groups of singers from nearly every continent on the globe. Under Larry’s leadership, Jubilate Vocal Ensemble achieved top honours in 2014 with the Elmer Iseler Award, and in 2016 brought home first place in the Equal Voice category for our Men’s Chorus. Stay tuned for a retrospective on our most recent experience at this incredible event.

Dr. Nickel is renowned for his skills in the world of choral music as a brilliant composer and arranger.  His oratorio, a Requiem for Peace, continues to be performed in many countries of the world. Members of Jubilate were thrilled to be invited to be part of presenting the Requiem in Germany in August 2015.  This past year, Larry’s work was featured at Podium 2016, in Edmonton, Alberta. Shortly thereafter, it was requested that he conduct portions of the Requiem at Carnegie Hall, with a full orchestra and a choir of over 140 singers, members of Jubilate among them!

As one might expect, in tandem with Larry’s success as a composer and arranger is the exponential growth in demand for publications from his company, Cypress Choral Music. So it is with mixed emotions that the choir has accepted Larry Nickel’s decision to step away from his position as conductor as of July 2016.

We acknowledge with gratitude the many gifts he has shared with us, and we wish him every success in the days to come. One of many legacies Larry leaves is his Schmeckfest event, a non-profit concert by choirs for choirs who all come together to share their love of choral music. Jubilate plans to continue this event in honour of Larry’s time with us.

Plans are underway for the 2016-2017 season, and Jubilate Vocal Ensemble is pleased to welcome Eldon McBride as our interim musical director. Updated information about our concert season, which will include three concerts and Schmeckfest, will be posted as our new choral year approaches. You won’t want to miss a beat!
